Your Health Data and AI Coaching: What Gets Used and Why

Before an app can coach your body, it has to be allowed to read it.

The plain answer: a running app uses health data only if that data changes the coaching decision. Heart rate helps estimate effort. Pace and cadence show how you are executing the run. Sleep and recovery signals help decide whether today should be hard, easy, or skipped. Training history shows whether the plan is building you up or burying you.

That does not mean every permission is harmless. It means every permission should earn its place.

If you are hesitating at the Apple Health screen, that is healthy. You are being asked to trade privacy for coaching value. Grant nothing, and most adaptive coaching becomes guesswork. Grant everything without reading, and you may share more than the app needs. The right move is slower: check what the app asks for, ask why each category matters, read the privacy policy, and remember that on Apple devices you can change your mind later.

What health data do running apps actually need?

A running app typically needs the data that describes load, effort, execution, and recovery. If a signal cannot change the advice, it should not be treated as essential.

There are two broad kinds of running apps.

A basic tracker can record distance, pace, time, and maybe a GPS map. It can work with very little health access. It tells you what happened.

A coaching app needs more. It tries to decide what should happen next. That decision depends on how hard the run was for your body, not just what the route looked like on a map.

Here is the simple test:

Can this data change today’s cue, tomorrow’s workout, or next week’s plan?

If yes, it may deserve a permission request. If no, the app should explain why it wants it.

For example, heart rate can change the cue you hear mid-run. If your pace is on target but your heart rate is climbing too high, a coach might tell you to back off. Pace alone would miss that. Cadence can show whether you are overstriding or tightening up when tired. Sleep can help the plan avoid stacking hard work on a bad recovery day.

This is the core exchange in AI coaching. You give the software signals from your body. It gives you more specific coaching than a fixed PDF plan can.

That does not make the exchange automatically worth it. It makes the exchange visible.

Why does heart rate matter for AI running coaching?

Heart rate helps a coaching app estimate effort in real time. Pace tells the app how fast you are moving. Heart rate helps explain what that pace costs you today.

That matters because the same pace can mean different things on different days.

You might run 6:00 per kilometer on a cool morning and feel smooth. The next week, the same pace in heat, stress, poor sleep, or fatigue may feel heavy. Your watch sees that through heart rate. Your breathing feels it before your brain admits it.

This is why heart rate zones exist. They are not magic labels. They are a way to group effort so a run has a purpose. Easy runs should feel controlled. Tempo work should feel strong but contained. Intervals should feel hard for a reason, not because you accidentally turned every run into a race.

For coaching, heart rate can help with:

  • Keeping easy runs easy
  • Spotting when a “normal” pace is costing too much
  • Adjusting effort on hills or into wind
  • Preventing hard workouts from becoming harder than planned
  • Comparing effort across runs over time

Heart rate is not perfect. Wrist readings can lag or misread, especially in cold weather, with a loose watch, or during sharp intervals. Caffeine, stress, heat, and dehydration can push it around. So a good coaching system should treat heart rate as a strong signal, not an oracle.

Your body still gets a vote. If you have chest pain, faintness, unusual shortness of breath, or symptoms that worry you, stop and seek medical help. A running app cannot clear you medically.

Why do pace and cadence need permission too?

Pace and cadence tell the app how you are executing the run. Heart rate shows internal effort. Pace and cadence show external behavior.

Pace is the obvious one. If the workout says “easy,” but you are running like it is a 5K, the app needs to know. If the workout says “three-minute hard effort,” the app needs to know whether you actually moved into the right range.

Cadence is simpler than many runners make it. It means steps per minute. It is not a moral score. The old “180 steps per minute” rule is folklore with a grain of truth: many runners do better when they avoid long, heavy strides, but there is no single perfect number for every body, speed, or hill.

For coaching, cadence can still be useful.

If your cadence drops and your pace slows late in a run, fatigue may be changing your mechanics. If your cadence spikes while pace barely changes, you may be shuffling. If you are trying to run easy but your stride gets tense, a coach may cue you to relax, shorten your stride slightly, or stop chasing pace.

An AI coach cannot watch your form in person. It cannot see your hip position, foot strike, arm swing, or whether one side is guarding pain. Cadence is only a proxy. Useful, but incomplete.

That limit matters. Running form is physical. If you have persistent pain, recurring injury, or a limp, see a physiotherapist, doctor, or qualified professional. Software can guide training choices. It cannot physically assess an injury.

What does each health permission change in the coaching?

A good permission request should come with a plain reason. Not “for a better experience.” Better how?

This table is not a permission slip for every app. It is a filter.

If an app asks for a data type, look for the matching coaching reason. If the reason is vague, pause. If the app explains the “why” clearly, you can make a cleaner decision.

How does Apple Health permission work?

On iPhone and Apple Watch, health permissions are granted category by category. You do not give one giant forever-yes to every health data type.

When an app asks for Health access, Apple shows separate categories. The app may ask to read data, write data, or both. Reading means the app can see that category. Writing means the app can add its own records, such as completed workouts.

You can usually manage this later in the Health app or Settings. The exact screen names can change with iOS versions, but the model is the same: you can review which apps have access to which health categories and turn access off.

That matters because your first answer is not permanent.

If you grant heart rate today and regret it later, revoke it. If you start with only workout access and later want adaptive coaching, you can add more. You are not locked into the first permission screen.

You should also separate Apple’s permission controls from the app’s privacy policy. Apple controls whether the app can access a category on your device. The app’s privacy policy explains what the app says it does after access is granted, including whether data is stored, shared, sold, or used for other purposes.

Both matter.

How should you judge a running app’s health data privacy?

Judge a running app by how clearly it explains the trade. You should not need to be a lawyer to understand why it wants your health data.

Before you grant access, ask five questions.

First: what data is requested?

Look at the categories. Heart rate, workouts, sleep, and activity history make sense for adaptive coaching. More sensitive categories deserve a clear reason.

Second: what is each category used for?

A good coaching app should be able to say, in plain English, “We use heart rate to coach effort” or “We use sleep to adjust readiness.” If the explanation sounds like filler, be careful.

Third: is the data sold or shared?

Do not assume. Read the privacy policy. Look for language about selling data, sharing with third parties, advertising, analytics, service providers, and legal requests. Policies are not fun reading. Read the parts that answer what happens to health data.

Fourth: can you delete data or revoke access?

Apple lets you revoke Health permissions. The app should also explain account deletion or data deletion if it stores data on its own systems.

Fifth: does the app still work if you say no?

Some features may work. Others will not. A fixed timer can run without much health access. A live coach that reacts to your body cannot do much if it cannot read the body signals it is meant to coach.

Can AI coaching be private and still useful?

AI coaching can be more private when the app asks for less, explains more, and lets you control access. But it cannot be fully adaptive while knowing nothing about you.

This is the part some marketing avoids.

If you want a plan that changes when you change, the app needs evidence that you changed. Reviewers increasingly test AI coaching apps this way: miss a session, rate a run as hard, sleep poorly, then see whether the plan actually adjusts. That is a fair test. A coach that never changes is just a calendar with confidence.

But adjustment requires input.

A plan generator can give you a schedule from a goal race and a weekly mileage number. It does not need much. A live coaching app that speaks during the run needs real-time signals. Heart rate, pace, and cadence are the difference between “Run 30 minutes easy” and “You are drifting too hard. Back off now.”

Still, AI coaching has limits even with full permissions.

It cannot watch your form in person. It cannot press on a sore tendon, test strength, or diagnose why your knee hurts. It cannot replace a physiotherapist or doctor. For elite goals, complex injury histories, or a season where every detail matters, a good human coach remains ahead.

AI coaching is strongest when the problem is pattern-based: pacing too hard, building too fast, skipping recovery, doing the wrong workout on the wrong day, or needing live reminders before you make the usual mistake.

Privacy-conscious does not mean anti-data. It means data has to earn trust.

What should you do before granting health permissions?

Slow down for one minute before you tap Allow.

Use this checklist:

  1. Match each permission to a coaching job. Heart rate for effort. Pace for execution. Sleep for readiness. History for progression.
  2. Deny anything that does not make sense to you. You can often add it later.
  3. Read the privacy policy for selling, sharing, and retention. Search the page for “sell,” “share,” “third party,” “advertising,” “analytics,” “delete,” and “health.”
  4. Start with the minimum you are comfortable with. Then see whether the coaching still feels useful.
  5. Review access after a week. If you are not using a feature, turn off the data it needs.
  6. Keep medical concerns outside the app. Persistent pain, chest symptoms, faintness, or unusual shortness of breath belongs with a professional.

The best permission choice is not the most locked-down choice by default. It is the choice you understand.

If you grant nothing, expect basic tracking and generic advice. If you grant the core signals, expect more personal coaching. If an app asks for more than it can explain, make it earn the answer.
