Your watch will happily give you thirty numbers. Most of them are not decisions.

The running metrics worth watching are the ones that change what you do next: how far you ran, how long it took, how hard it felt, and whether anything hurt. After that, heart rate, cadence, resting heart rate trend, and weekly volume can help if you understand the context. Everything else may be interesting, but for most amateur runners it should not steer the run.

Metric overload happens when your watch turns every run into a performance review. You finish an easy run and instead of asking, “Did I keep it easy?” you stare at ground contact time, power, stress, readiness, stride length, and a score that says you are somehow both improving and tired.

You do not need fewer facts because you are lazy. You need fewer facts because training is a decision system. If a number does not help you decide whether to slow down, stop, rest, repeat, or progress, it is probably noise today.

Which running metrics actually matter?

The metrics that matter most are the ones that answer a direct training question. Distance answers, “How much did I do?” Time answers, “How long was I on my feet?” Effort answers, “How hard was that for my body today?” Pain answers, “Is this safe to repeat?”

Distance matters because your body adapts to repeated exposure. You can track it in kilometers or miles. The pattern is simple. Good metrics answer a question you already know how to act on. Weak metrics create a feeling without a decision.

Why do more running metrics make training feel worse?

Easy runs are the biggest victim.

But what was the job of the run?

Training load tries to summarize that stress in a single score. It can be helpful if you understand what the device is counting and if you do not treat it like law. Different platforms estimate load differently. Some use heart rate. Some use pace, power, or time. Some blend signals into a score that feels more certain than it is.

Which running metrics should you ignore most of the time?

You should ignore metrics that sound technical but do not clearly change your next action. For most amateur runners, that includes ground contact time, vertical oscillation, many power estimates, stress scores, and daily readiness verdicts.

Ground contact time and vertical oscillation can be useful in a lab, with a coach, or as part of a specific form project. Alone, they are easy to misread. A tired runner may spend longer on the ground. A taller runner may naturally move differently than a shorter runner. A trail run will not look like a flat road run. If you chase these numbers without knowing the tradeoff, you may make your stride tense and less natural.

Running power is more complicated. Cyclists have used power for a long time because the measurement is direct at the bike. Running power is typically estimated through a device model. It can help some runners pace hills, wind, and varied terrain, especially if they train with it consistently. But if you already struggle to manage pace, effort, heart rate, and recovery, adding power may just give you another number to argue with.

Stress scores and readiness scores are tempting because they promise a daily answer. Run hard. Run easy. Rest. Go.

Treat them as suggestions.

Your watch does not know the full story. It may see changes in heart rate, sleep, movement, or other signals. It may not know that your child was sick, your workday was heavy, the weather changed, your strap was loose, or you feel better after ten minutes of movement.

A readiness score can start a conversation. It should not end it.

If a metric makes you anxious but does not help you choose a better run, bury it. You are allowed to make your watch quieter.

What should you put on your running watch face?

Put the numbers you can act on during the run on the main watch face. Bury the rest in a menu for later, if you want it at all.

For most easy runs, your main screen should show:

  • Time elapsed
  • Distance in kilometers or miles
  • Current or lap pace, if pace does not make you race the watch
  • Heart rate, if you use it calmly
  • A way to check effort and pain in your own head

That last one is not a field on the screen. It is a habit. Ask yourself: “Could I keep this going comfortably?” and “Is anything hurting in a way that changes my stride?”

For workouts, the screen can change. If you are doing structured faster running, lap time and lap pace may matter more. If you are on hills, effort may matter more than current pace. If you train by heart rate, heart rate belongs on the screen, but only if you trust the reading and know what you will do when it climbs.

After the run, keep the review short. Log distance, time, effort, and pain. Look at heart rate, cadence, and weekly volume only if they answer a question. Then move on.

The runner who tracks four things consistently usually trains better than the runner who tracks twenty things inconsistently. Consistency makes patterns visible. Too much data makes every run feel like an exception.
